When you give ambitious minds the right resources, real outcomes follow. Over the past two months, our summer fellows have turned complex capstone projects into functional assets that directly drive our work. Whether building a brand-new data dashboard or analyzing policy strategy, their work proves that innovative thinking sparks measurable change.
These projects are far from busy work. They are active solutions to challenges that contribute to opportunity gaps in our state. Curated with intention alongside managers and leadership, each initiative is designed to fill a real organizational need and match the professional opportunities each fellow wants to explore, meeting fellows where they are, rather than expecting them to do work that doesn't align with their own professional vision.
Over the past few weeks, all 14 fellows stood up to present data-driven, consulting-informed, and professionally sharp solutions, entirely their own, to the entire company, celebrating how far they've come and highlighting the lasting impact of their contributions.
Those final presentations are the culmination of a summer spent turning ideas into action. Along the way, fellows work closely with their managers to shape projects around real organizational needs, incorporate feedback, and build on what they learn throughout the fellowship. By the time they present to the full Commit team, fellows have transformed those ideas into meaningful work that supports their teams, reflects their professional interests, and contributes to Commit’s broader goals.
As a future fellow, you'll follow this same path: creating, developing, and presenting a meaningful project that directly supports your summer team and contributes to the broader goals of The Commit Partnership. Your work will align with high-impact priorities that drive system-level change, informing decisions that advance educational and economic outcomes across the region.
Beyond leading a project, you'll gain firsthand nonprofit experience, learning how Commit fits into the public education and economic mobility ecosystem. Most importantly, your efforts will have a tangible impact on the students and families of Dallas County, helping to remove barriers, elevate opportunity, and shape a more equitable future. And ultimately, help us achieve our Opportunity 2040 goal: that by 2040 at least half of all 25- to 34-year-old residents of Dallas County, irrespective of race, will earn a living wage.
The Programmatic Team: From District Data to Lasting Impact
One fellow whose capstone is directly relevant to her current work in the district is Lesly Gramajo, whose project, “Beyond the Numbers: Building Evidence and Capacity for Mesquite ISD's PACE Program,” tackled a real gap in the district's teacher pipeline.
She entered her team, EC-12, with a challenge: Mesquite ISD had invested in growing its own teacher pipeline through the Pathways Advancing to Certified Educators (PACE) program but lacked the evidence to evaluate its impact. Splitting her time between Commit and her district partners, Lesly took on a unique project supported by both a Commit direct manager, who guided her throughout the summer, and a Mesquite ISD direct manager, who helped her access district data and provided feedback through a district lens.
Through biweekly visits, she helped design and conduct a comprehensive evaluation comparing PACE teachers to other teacher groups, translated complex student outcome data into actionable insights, and developed sustainable tools and recommendations the district can use to strengthen and continuously evaluate the program moving forward.
Her work with district leaders is directly informing their ongoing efforts and will prove incredibly valuable, a reflection of the same philosophy she carried into her fellowship from day one. Earlier this summer, fellows were challenged to design a personal brand statement, aligning what they were learning through their work with how they show up in a room as a professional. Lesly's statement captures exactly why Mesquite ISD trusted her with this project in the first place: "The strongest solutions are those that are shaped with the people closest to the work, not for them. My role is to help turn their insight into strategy, action, and lasting change."
The Enablement Team: Humanizing Impact Through Strategic Storytelling
The beauty of this process is that it results in projects like this very blog, created in collaboration with communications and engagement fellow Natalie Luera.
An undergraduate at Harvard College, Natalie joined the organization wanting to better understand how to leverage communications strategy when engaging diverse stakeholders, and that's exactly what her project centered on.
The Commit Partnership is a deeply data-driven organization, and sharing high-level metrics is central to our work. Natalie's capstone focused on curating content that aligns with our current brand strategy while deploying changes to bridge the divide between simply stating our impact and telling the genuine human story of the Summer Fellowship experience.
Overall, this initiative was centered on humanizing our work, helping us better attract and align professionals entering the education equity ecosystem who share Commit's values and vision. In what she describes as a "thought partnership" more than an average manager-fellow relationship, Natalie was allowed to bring skills from her personal social projects into a full social media campaign, giving future fellows a look at what she accomplished and the chance to see the kind of investment they might receive as well.
The campaign and strategy Natalie built don't end when her fellowship does; they're now part of how Commit tells its story going forward.
. That isn't possible without the incredible minds who come into this organization ready to learn and dedicate themselves to making it happen.
Even at the beginning of their careers, these fellows have already left an indelible imprint, driving systemic change and shaping student outcomes, one capstone at a time. If their capstones sound like the kind of work you want to be part of, we'd love to hear from you next summer.
This blog is part of our Summer Fellowship series, offering an inside look at how Commit's fellowship prepares the next generation of education changemakers. Follow along as we share the experiences, learning, and leadership development that shape this year's fellows and the impact they're working to create.
